Do You Work From Home or From an Office?

I was arranging lunch with someone the other day. In fact, I was working things out with two guys at the same time, so I asked the question twice as we tried to figure out a mutually agreeable location.

“From home,” they both replied.

The fact that I now routinely ask the question fascinates me.

The fact that they both said “from home” blows me away.

Things have definitely changed.

The explanation for businesses moving their teams from central office locations to their homes varies:

  • Some do it for the convenience of the employees.
  • Some do it to save on real estate.
  • Some do it because of a green initiative.
  • Some do it to keep the employees closer to customers.

Working from home is the reality for many professionals today in a broad range of occupations.

The question is no longer whether to have your employees work remotely. The question is why make them come to an office? Are there good reasons for you to bring everyone together every single day?

Don’t assume that an office makes sense anymore. Evaluate the needs of your business. What is the best thing for you, your clients, and your practice?

Back in the day, all law firms brought everyone to the office. Today, law firms are reducing space, letting employees stay at home, and finding new and better ways to promote communication and collaboration with clients and co-workers.

Before you lease that new space, ask yourself whether it’s better to work from home or from an office.
