“We’ll do it this way for now, and we’ll fix it later. We’ll do it the better way when we can.”
How many times have I said that?
I’ve lost count. I have no idea. I’ve certainly said it many, many—too many times.
But life is what happens while we’re doing it “this way for now.” “When we can” never comes.
I’m talking about our marketing, our management, and our technology. We’ll attract and select better clients—when we can. We’ll do a better job of training and coaching our team—when we can. We’ll implement that smart document management system, document preparation software, and e-discovery product—when we can.
“When we can” never comes. This is it. Now is happening—right now. Tomorrow, when it finally arrives, is just another right now. And, tomorrow, we’ll say it again, “We’ll do it the better way when we can.”
The time to do it is now. The resources for doing it won’t be more available tomorrow. It’ll always be a challenge to make it happen.
Not enough money? Not enough time? Not enough education? Not enough people? Not enough whatever?
Enough isn’t coming. It’ll always be hard to do it the better way. It’ll always be a stretch.
Why not stretch now? Why wait? “When we can” isn’t going to pull up to your front door in a limousine. That’s not how it works. “When we can” needs to be now, or it’s never going to happen.
