Blockbuster and Borders are disintegrating. They’ve both avoided liquidation for now, but they’re in the most serious trouble they’ve ever encountered.
Borders is getting trounced by Amazon.
Blockbuster is losing out to Netflix.
These two corporations are continuing the tradition of refusing to change and evolve like we’ve seen time and time again.
We’ve been watching it with magazines as they’ve closed down. Newspapers lose circulation and advertising dollars every day. We saw it years ago with travel agents. The list goes on and on.
Are we lawyers immune?
Did the newspapers and magazines see it coming as Google and the rest of the Internet took the advertising dollars? Did they think they were immune?
Of course we’re subject to the same market disruptions as other industries.
We’re vulnerable to document preparation services, accounting firms seeking new business, non-lawyer mediators, online services, etc., etc.
Who’s going to take our business? Are they working on it right now?
Certainly they are. There’s money at stake, and a healthy capitalist economy needs innovation and change.
Will you be Blockbuster or Borders and watch it happen?
Or will you change? Will you be a leader or a victim?
Now is the time to decide.
