“It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change.” -Charles Darwin
It’s popular to argue for the status quo. It’s comforting to people to hear that things won’t change. It’s especially comforting for lawyers.
With marketing, they’re against advertising, social media, and most other forms of marketing other than word of mouth.
With technology, they’re against the cloud, working remotely, and virtual practice.
With management, they’re against systems, virtual employees, and non-lawyer ownership.
They say “let lawyers be lawyers.” Things have always been fine; they’ll always be fine.
One thing won’t change—there will always be critics putting down those leaders shining the light toward the future. The critics will attack the leaders’ ethics, character, and the quality of their work. Their discomfort with change makes them angry, and they dig in their heels.
Where will the critics be when the change comes? Will they be there to help you? Or will they be left behind with their followers? Are you letting them lead you away from being responsive to change?
