If you want to grow…you’ve got to let go.
I’ve learned that the hard way. Staying overly involved in every little thing keeps you stuck right where you are. You’ve got to hand control to others and let them run with it.
That’s a big change. In the early days, you have to do everything. Getting it all done is the big challenge. You have to do the legal work, run to the bank, make the copies, mail the letters, tweak the website, and respond to every e-mail. You’re the one who knows how to do it all.
You can keep doing it all if you want to remain small. However, if you want to grow, then…you’ve got to let go.
Letting go is a big challenge. It’s a tough transition. Others won’t do it the way you do it, and sometimes they’re not going to do it as well as you did it. It’s very difficult.
One day soon, you’ll find yourself showing someone how the drinks should be arranged in the refrigerator in the kitchen. Is that the highest and best use of your time?
The drinks will be fine. Yes, they’ll be different, but everything will be okay.
They’ll order a different kind of pen than you like. Everything will be okay.
They’ll answer the phone a bit differently, they’ll deal with the judge differently, and they’ll interact with clients differently. Everything will be okay.
This is your next big challenge. If you want to grow…you’ve got to let go.
