When I mention the word networking, a lot of lawyers imagine networking events. The first action that many lawyers think about when they start thinking about networking is attending these networking events sponsored by local business groups, chambers of commerce, that sort of thing. I’m not a fan of these events. They are usually pretty awful and I don’t suggest that that’s where you start.

You should skip most events promoted as networking events. By and large, networking events are a shotgun approach to building relationships. You’ll meet the wrong people. You need a different approach. You need a targeted approach to meeting people who are ready, willing and able to refer business to you right now. A shotgun approach is not likely to work for you.
