If you aren’t going to gatherings sponsored by business groups, then how are you going to meet the people you need to meet? Where are you going to find professionals who can refer business to you? What works much better than these networking events is the idea of specifically targeting the people with whom you would like to build your network.

I think of it as applying a laser beam approach to networking. We’re focusing directly on the people we’d like to include in our referral network. Instead of a broad approach, you’re targeting an individual, or a small group of individuals, rather than targeting everyone in the community, or every business person in the community. You’re laser focused.

Today’s assignment is up in the podcast feed, and we’re getting serious about identifying the right people. I have some criteria I want you to apply when thinking about who you’re going to identify for your list, and they’re important – adding people because they’re “easy”, isn’t going to get you where you want to be. Listen to the audio and add five more people to your list. Report in when you’ve identified your people.
