You should go to a costume party for Halloween. If you’re not invited to one, you should have your own.

And you should dress up, of course. You should dress up as a lawyer.

I knew a lawyer, years ago, that was very active around town. She was a dog trainer and led dog training classes as a hobby. She was involved in other groups. She had a wide circle of friends and was a leader in several women’s groups.

She didn’t get many referrals. In fact, she got fewer than that.

Why?

Because no one knew she was a lawyer. She was known as a wonderful person, a great contributor, but not as a lawyer.

It’s critical that you be out and about, that’s a given. But, it’s really important that people know what you do. You need to be known as a lawyer and it’s important that people know the kind of cases you take. The only way that’s going to happen is if you tell them.

You’ve got to get comfortable with talking about your work, your passion for your work and the kinds of people you can help.

On Halloween dress up. Be a lawyer. That will prompt you and others to talk about your work. On October 31st it’s going to be easy to bring up the law because you’ll be wearing your legal costume.

You can be a judge, or

you can be an aristocratic lawyer from times gone by, or

you can be a provocative prosecutor (and she’s on sale, well at least the costume is).

Maybe you’ll be a sexy judge. The choice is yours – just keep it legal.

Whatever you decide to be, make it prompt discussion of your work. Make sure people know who you are and what you do. The rest of the year may be a little more challenging, but I’m confident that you can work it in.
