How’s Your Own Marriage?

We spend an awful lot of time examing the marriages of others. Do we need to spend more time taking a look at our own? I’m blown away by the number of divorces I find among divorce lawyers. It seems like we should be learning what not to do from our clients but that frequently doesn’t seem to be the case.

I’m on a quick trip this week with Lisa, my wife. We’re in Asheville, North Carolina hanging out at the Biltmore Estate and checking out the culinary scene. The kids were left at home. Mostly, we’re walking and talking. It’s the talking that matters most.

I’ve done sixty plus episodes of a podcast called Stay Happily Married featuring marriage experts. They all say, in very different ways, pretty much the same thing – “communicate”. I suppose it should be obvious that you’ve got to talk, and to listen, for a relationship to work. For me, however, it’s pretty easy to forget or simply ignore that need.

We’re taking a few minutes to reflect on the commitment we made nearly 19 years ago. And I’m doing my best to avoid the fate of our clients. Hopefully, doing a Stay Happily Married interview each week will help keep me on track.
