Can You See Your New Law Firm?

Your vision of your practice is what your practice is going to look like in the future.

Today, your vision of your future practice is just a dream created by your imagination.

A few years from now, that vision is going to be your reality.

That’s the way things truly work for many of us.

Vision becomes reality.

Why? For a variety of reasons, but mainly your vision becomes reality because you start making decisions that create the reality. You take action that builds the new reality piece by piece.

The problem for many practitioners is that they lack a vision.

You can’t make the decisions and head toward a defined future if you can’t see the vision.

If you have a murky vision of where you’re going, you’re going to end up in a murky place.

If your vision of the future looks just like your present, then you’re going to stay in your present.

Here’s what you need to do if you want to manifest your vision. It’s easy, and it works.

Sit down somewhere quiet with a notepad and pen (or a computer with no games and no Internet).

Start writing about the new firm. Answer these questions, and answer any others that pop into your head. Give yourself the time and space to think.

What difference will it make in the world? What kind of people will work there? What kind of space will it have? How will it feel to work there? What kind of clients will it help? What kind of relationships will it have with other professionals and businesses? What will people in the community think of the firm? How will the community know about the firm? What kind of feelings will the community have about the firm? How will it feel to work in the firm? Who will want to work in the firm? Why will they want to be a part of the firm? What will relationships be like in the firm? How will the team interact with one another?

Let your brain float freely. Don’t worry about reality. Don’t be limited by time, space, or any other constraint that limits you.

Just let it flow. You’ve got to start to see your new firm. The clearer you get about where you’re going, the more likely you are to get there.

What’s next? Remind yourself of the vision. Keep it alive in your mind. Each day you’ll make decisions that build the vision, now that you know where you’re going.

If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will get you there.

If you know where you’re going, you’re going to head straight there.
