Is Your Own Marriage Suffering?

How many divorce lawyers do you know who are divorced? Lots, I’ll bet.

We aren’t much better than our clients at staying married.

You’d think we’d learn something from watching our clients make mistakes.

You’d think we’d know that communication is the most important thing we can do to stay married. One would imagine we’d be talking with our spouses all the time based on what we’ve witnessed.

You’d think we’d be good at letting our spouses be right. That we’d know when to quit arguing and let our spouse win.

You’d think we’d be good at taking time for our marriages and making them special. You might think we would schedule weekends away as a couple and write love notes and leave them on our spouse’s pillow.

You’d think we know how to work out money issues, in-law issues, kid issues, etc. since we’ve seen it all.

You’d think we could be committed enough, self-sacrificing enough, and mature enough to make it work.

You’d think we could put the collective interest above our individual interests.

Yet, shockingly, here we are getting divorced like everyone else.

It doesn’t have to be that way. We can do better. We should be the experts on what not to do.
