More often than not, life is actually fair. I find that annoying.
The lawyer who stays in touch with the CEO for a decade usually gets the company as a client.
The lawyer who connects with other lawyers online, at bar association events, and around town usually gets the referrals.
The lawyer who makes weekly follow-up calls (for months and months) after the initial consultation usually closes the deal.
The lawyer who insists on a weekly one-to-one meeting with each member of his staff has minimal turnover and a loyal team.
The lawyer who conducts a daily check-in meeting with her team has high levels of productivity.
The lawyer who reminds the associates to enter their time ends up with with the time all entered by the end of the month, and revenues to show for her effort.
The lawyer who’s too busy, distracted, overwhelmed, or unwilling to consistently and persistently follow up, stay in touch, meet regularly, and stay on top of people ends up with what you’d expect.
Yeah, it’s fair. But still–I’d like a time-money-energy saving shortcut, so I keep searching. I’ve never really found that magic bullet.
It’s fair, and I guess that’s fair.
