What’s the first thing lawyers tell me when we start talking about change?

“We can’t do it that way here. Things are different here.”

For example:

• Fixed fees?

“It can’t be done here. Things are different here. The judges won’t let us withdraw.”

• Paperless office?

“It can’t be done here. The court requires us to have the paper.”

• Credit cards?

“It can’t be done here. Our bar has really strict rules about that.”

• Video during trial?

“It can’t be done here. We don’t have the equipment, and the judges don’t like it anyway.”

If it were up to these people, we’d still be living in the dark in caves and talking about why fire is something that “can’t be done here.”

Yes, things may be different where you are. But that doesn’t mean it can’t be done.

It may mean you’ve got to make some changes to the way you do it. It may mean you’ve got to get the rules changed. It may mean you’ve got to find a way around the rules.

It can be done: you can find a way.
