You’ve been doing this a long time. One client seems like the next. It’s hard to remember that this is the most important moment in your client’s life when it’s just another meeting for you.
You were probably better at listening during initial consultations in the early years. You found every story interesting. Your brain went into overdrive thinking of the things you could do to help.
In fact, back then, the stories were interesting. Sex, drugs, and rock and roll. Every new client had a tale to tell.
Now it’s all routine. Same old, same old stuff. You’ve heard every story there is. You’ve probably heard them all ten times or more.
It’s just another day at the office.
It’s not, however, just another day to the person sitting on the other side of the desk.
For your client, it’s one of the biggest days of his or her life. It rivals the wedding day, the birth of a child, and graduation from college. Coming to see a divorce lawyer is a huge life moment.
If you’re drifting off when your client is describing the facts of his or her life, then you’re in trouble.
How do you get over it? How do you get engaged again? I’m not sure. Are you? Got any ideas? Leave them in the comments below.
